This long and lovely planting bed is always on view, yet it was clogged with invasive, overgrown and elderly plants. However three mature cabbage palms, several large roses and a hawthorn hedge were worth saving. The bed can be viewed from inside the home, it is accessible by an east and a west gate, and can be seen when using the swimming pool. The goals were to add color and interesting textures using mainly permanent or perennial plants. In this photo you can see the framework of the three cabbage palm trunks, the existing hawthorn hedge, the canes of one of the climbing roses and the undulating pathway. You are looking towards the west gate. At the base of the photo is a special bromeliad called ‘Mend’, which has yellow and green-striped leaves that will blush pink towards the center. Progressing westward are pink pentas and at their feet a bright pink form of Barleria repens. The pale blue small flower belongs to Scabiosa sp. (pincushion flower), which is a bit of a gamble, as this perennial typically grows in zone 9A or 8. You can just make out some magenta berries in front of the nearest palm trunk. This is our native beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) whose fruit lasts for months in the fall and winter. The leaves with bright yellow polka-dots belong to croton ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’, which contrast nicely with scarlet geraniums along the path and Salvia miniata behind. The bird bath was moved forward and is now centered on axis with the swimming pool.
