The owners didn’t want a southwest look (dry/gray foliage/gravel), but a tropical Florida look modified to fit the site. We found this fabulous variegated screw pine (Pandanus) created a lot of interest. While it has a spiky form, the leaves are spineless, and we do not expect this type to form a trunk. In the narrow bed behind the screw pine grows the flapjack kalanchoe (K. thyrsiflora). This perennial from South Africa loves the full sun and dry conditions. In the fall it will take weeks for flower stalks to grow two feet into the air, eventually tipped with small yellow flowers. When the stalks are spent and looking crummy, cut them down to the ground and allow new plants to form at the base of the old plant. To the left of the entry, the owners found these super-cool ceramic balls, and expertly placed them among some red pentas. The chunky pine nuggets imitate an arid growing site.
