If your garden is a priority in your life, then you are ready for the       Narrow Space Gets Interesting A narrow space on the east side of a home posed a challenge. Two large air conditioning units needed to be camouflaged. Views looking out from multiple windows needed to be pretty, yet the windows needed to be screened for privacy. Access through this space was needed from the front gate to the back yard. We created a winding mulch path and used shrubbery to camouflage the appearance of the air conditioning units, without blocking air flow. The A/C unit to the left of the photo was blocked with a Spanish stopper (Eugenia foetida) one of our native plants. The large A/C unit down the path is hidden with an awabuki viburnum (Viburnum odoratissima 'Awabuki'). The red flower to the left of the screen is our native scarlet hibiscus (Hibiscus coccinea). It needs constant moisture, which is provided by the dripping A/C water from condensation. On the large A/C unit we left the wet area from it's condensation pipe free of mulch, so that wasps and other insects could come and get a drink or gather mud. Queen's wreath (Petrea volubilis) will cover the fence and provide privacy, as will several native myrsine (Rapanea guianensis) which are young and very short right now.
