If your garden is a priority in your life, then you are ready for the       Native Shrubs Shine The west side of this home borders a large pond, where the clients wanted to create an easy-care, natural habitat for otters (!), waterfowl and other birds to hang out. In order to create this habitat, we removed a southern magnolia tree, which was planted too close to the building, and added a diverse native shrub and perennial border. New plants were installed in August 2008 seen in the "before" picture. The "after" picture was taken in August 2009. You can see that ample space was given to allow shrubs to grow and mature naturally, with almost no pruning. (Contrast this style of planting with most new landscape installations you see, where no extra space has been allotted, and where severe pruning must be done to keep plants from becoming overgrown.) Our biggest challenge with this new garden was keeping the Bermuda grass in the lawn from creeping into the beds. (A St. Augustine lawn was originally installed, but seed from community mowers brought in Bermuda grass. In a perfect world, mower blades would be cleaned in-between lawns!) The homeowner installed a plastic edging which seems to be working quite well in keeping the weed grass out.
